Smoke, Service, and Community: The 2026 Boro BBQ Festival Sets a New Standard

On Saturday, May 2, the smoke rolled across Hop Springs, and with it came a record-breaking crowd, the unmistakable aroma of championship barbecue, and another powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together for a good cause. Check out the photos at the bottom!

The 2026 Boro BBQ Festival, presented by the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club, drew more than 11,000 attendees to eastern Rutherford County for a day filled with world-class barbecue, live music, family activities, arts and crafts, and fellowship. More importantly, the festival raised over $100,000 that will be returned directly to nonprofit organizations and charitable causes throughout our community.

That number represents more than dollars.

It represents scholarships for students, support for local nonprofits, assistance for families in need, and continued investment in the organizations that make Rutherford County a better place to live.

In other words, it represents Rotary in action.

More Than a Festival

For most attendees, Boro BBQ Fest is a day of fun. It is free to attend, family-friendly, and packed with activities for all ages. Visitors enjoy competition barbecue, the People’s Choice tasting, more than 100 vendors, a family zone, craft beverages, and live entertainment throughout the day. (borobbqfest.com)

But behind the scenes, the event is one of the largest volunteer-driven fundraisers in Middle Tennessee.

The festival is organized and hosted by the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club, a group of local business and community leaders committed to the Rotary motto: Service Above Self. Funds raised through the event are distributed through the Club’s charitable foundation to support educational initiatives, community nonprofits, and humanitarian causes.

What began in 2013 as a relatively modest barbecue competition with 17 teams has grown into one of Tennessee’s premier barbecue festivals and Murfreesboro’s only Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS)-sanctioned competition. (borobbqfest.com)

The 2026 festival marked another milestone in that journey.

A Community-Wide Effort

Events of this size do not happen by accident.

More than 100 volunteers—both members of the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club and friends from throughout the community—gave their time and energy to make the event successful. Volunteers handled everything from parking and setup to beverage sales, ticketing, logistics, sponsorship fulfillment, and cleanup.

The event was co-chaired by two outstanding Rotarians, Chris Copeland and Taylor Payne, whose leadership, attention to detail, and steady problem-solving guided the festival from early planning to the final awards presentation.

Veteran broadcaster and Rotarian Bob Gerard once again served as master of ceremonies, bringing his signature enthusiasm and professionalism to the main stage.

And special recognition belongs to Bill Taylor, whose passion and vision for the Boro BBQ Festival have helped shape it into the community institution it is today. Bill’s leadership over the years has been instrumental in building not just a successful fundraiser, but an event that reflects the heart of Rotary and the spirit of Rutherford County.

Thank You to Our Sponsors

The Boro BBQ Festival remains free to the public because of the generous support of sponsors who believe in giving back to the community.

In particular, the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club extends heartfelt appreciation to our three presenting-level sponsors:

These sponsors, along with dozens of additional business partners, make it possible to host an event that not only entertains thousands but also produces meaningful financial support for local causes.

Their investment demonstrates that corporate and personal philanthropy can have a tangible impact when combined with volunteer effort and a clear mission.

Championship Barbecue Takes Center Stage

At the center of the festival is the Dr. George Smith BBQ Brawl, Murfreesboro’s only KCBS-sanctioned barbecue competition.

Fifty elite teams from across the country competed in categories including chicken, ribs, and “Anything Butt,” all vying for the title of Grand Champion.

The 2026 Grand Champion was Big B BBQ Company, which earned top honors after a day of fierce but friendly competition. Complete results, including category winners and special awards, are available on the festival website. View the 2026 Competition Winners (Facebook)

For barbecue enthusiasts, the competition is serious business.

And, as a special note, congratulate Holy Smoke BBQ team for a rare Perfect Perfect Score in the Anything Butt Competition!

For the rest of us, it is an opportunity to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of some of the finest barbecue east of the Mississippi River and west of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Real Winner: Our Community

The most important result of the day was not listed on a scoreboard.

It was the impact created by more than $100,000 in funds raised.

Those dollars will help support organizations serving children, families, schools, and countless community needs. They will fund projects that many people will never directly see but that will change lives in meaningful ways.

That is the true purpose of the Boro BBQ Festival.

Barbecue may draw the crowd, but service is the reason we do it.
